Choosing the right magic lessons is never an easy task. To begin with there are not that many magic courses available in the market. When you do find them how do you know what is right for you? There are many considerations such as cost of the course and the experience of the tutor etc… So I am writing a few words that you may consider when making your decision.
First and foremost make a decisions as to what you would like to learn. Think about they type of magic you enjoy and what you would like to perform. Are you wanting to become a professional or is it just for family and friends? This will be very important when choosing a tutor. For example if your interest is in classic magic then find a tutor that is schooled in classic magic and also performs classic magic. In my opinion there is very little point wanting to learn for example mentalism from and illusionist. I hope you get my point. So once you have decided what style you would like to learn then the hunt for a good tutor begins.
Watch as many videos as you can, identify the people who’s performances you admire and then research them and their style. You may find that some of the professionals offer courses. Google and YouTube are obviously very valuable tools in your search. Once you have identified some prospective tutors, you can contact them. Have a chat to them, soon you will feel if there is someone that resonates with you. If you feel that they are right then you can take the next step of discussing the structure of your lessons.
It is important to set goals and outcomes. this way you can monitor your progress and begin your journey into the world of magic. Also this will ensure that you have structured a learning syllabus that is tailored to the type of magic you want to learn.
Before I start teaching a student I consult with them to understand what they want to get out of a magic course. Once we have both agreed on the outcomes I will plan a course specifically tailored to the individual. Naturally each course is different depending on your experience. I teach beginners and intermediate students.
Magic Lessons Structure
1. Assessment of skills
I will sit down with you and asses your skills that you may have learned so far. It is important for me to asses that you have learned correct techniques. If you have mastered the basics already we could asses your performance. This would be done by you performing a few effects. Here we will asses technique, style of performance, creativity and scripting, to name a few.
2. Goal Setting
Learning magic is like any other study. You need to set your personal goals in terms of what you want to achieve. It is very important for me to understand what you like and what you don’t. For example you may have no interest in performing on stage, instead you want to be able to work in a restaurant performing table magic. Once we have set the goals we can break these down into milestone. Rather than trying to learn everything in one go we break down the goal into manageable parts that suits your personal commitments.
This syllabus will be different for every student. You will master all the basic sleights if you have not already mastered them. I will also teach you some theory on misdirection that I have learned over the years. This is really important for those of you who create your own effects and routines. This will give you a valuable foundation and ability perform a wide variety of effects and even create your own routines. The speed at which you learn at is completely dependent on you. Learning basic sleights can sometimes seem extremely boring as it consists of repeating the same actions over and over again. You need to create new muscle memory and develop muscles in your hands that you have never used before. This part os the course is almost like going to gym. Stay the course and you will see the results over time.
4. Creating a routine
Each person is different and your repertoire will be too. I will help you develop a performance routine suited to your skill level and also one that can be developed and added to. We will create a routine that engages with people and allows you to perform in public. I will teach you how to take the simplest effects and create magic with them.
5. How to create magic
Depending on your level I can teach you techniques that I use when I create magic effects. If you are starting out I will show you how to perform effects that are no longer just tricks.
